  • Get to know Hanx the Manx, Our Latest #JaneryStyle star!

Congrats to our latest #JaneryStyle ComPETition winner, Hanx and his mom, Taura.

We always leave it up to random.org to pick our winner, because there’s no way we could choose ourselves!

Taura and her trio of Manx have been longtime fans of Janery and we’ve enjoyed watching her pride grow over the years, but when we saw Hanx, well, we could tell he was special.

Since Hanx is so purr-ty atop his Faux Fur Catnip Cuddler, we decided to give him the model treatment and learn more about his story.

    How old is Hanx?

Hanx just turned 6 months old and he’s already almost 8 lbs!

What was the inspiration for Hanx’s name?

Tom Hanks was visiting my town while filming the Mr. Roger’s movie so I checked his Instagram to see if he posted anything local and noticed that he signed all of his posts as Hanx. I thought that would make a great cat name, and lo and behold, not two weeks later I ended up with a kitten! My friends call him Tom Hanx Cat, lol.

How did Hanx join your family?

My coworker found him wandering in her yard when he was only 4 weeks old. After much peer pressure, I took him in to complete my Manx Trifecta. He was still on kitten formula and had never seen a litter box before, but otherwise, he’s been the easiest cat I’ve ever had.

What are some of Hanx’s funniest habits?

Hanx is a giant goofball! He never turns around to look at things, he just turns his head around or flips it upside down to see what’s going on behind him! He’s quite the cuddler and enjoys hanging out inside my sweatshirt.

    What’s Hanx’s sleeping style? Is he a curler-upper, a stretcher-outer, or a flop-down-anywhere sort of pet?

Hanx can fall asleep anywhere. He normally curls up like a little shrimp, but sometimes he’ll just stretch out across my ankles or over another cat with his head hanging off the couch.

What kind of treats does Hanx go crazy for?

Food. In general. Mine. His. He doesn’t mind! He acts like he’s always starving.

How has Hanx changed your life/your family’s life for the better?

Hanx came to me not long before my best friend passed away from cancer. Having his crazy antics to take my mind off things and always have a warm fuzzy cat in my lap helped me greatly. He sleeps under the covers with me every night, he follows me everywhere I go, and he keeps the Big Kitties on their toes! We’re all so glad to have him.

    Do you have other pets?

Pixie (7) and Thea (4) are both Manx cats as well. I adopted Thea about a year before Hanx and she and Pixie had tolerated each other but it wasn’t love. Hanx fills such a need for both of them. Thea is definitely a Momma and taught him how to be a cat and he will cuddle with her and they’ll groom each other for hours. Pixie is so playful and is glad to have a friend to get into trouble with!

What has been your biggest challenge with Hanx?

Ankle biting! He didn’t have littermates to teach him to play, so he learned from Thea, who I often refer to as The Bitey One.

If you could give prospective or new pet owners one piece of advice, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to take in an orphan kitten! Kitten Lady’s website taught me everything I needed to know and my little boy is the most bonded, sweet, playful guy I could’ve ever imagined!

  • Meet Mr. Smokey, Our Latest #JaneryStyle star!

Congrats to our latest #JaneryStyle ComPETition winner, Mr. Smokey.

When we saw this photo of Smokey perched on our Merlin Mat, we fell in love! And who could resist that sassy caption?

Smokey is a rescued Havanese living life high on the hill - the actual Capitol Hill in Washington, DC!  He's an official pup of the #officedogsofcapitolhill project working with his mom in the office of Bernie Sanders! Apparently, dogs have had a longstanding role as part of the political work efforts of our nation's capitol.  Find his super adorable official political portrait here, and learn more about the photo project!

(I learned something new today.  I hope you did too :)

We are so happy that his name came out of the (virtual) hat. That fabulous, furry little face was just what our busy week needed.

Smokey and his mom will receive a chic prize package from Janery and one of our favorite candle makers, Sydney Hale.

Random.org does the hard work to pick our winner, and that’s a good thing! We could never choose from all of the pet stars we see everyday at Janery.

  • Meet the Janery Model: Kota

You might recognize our latest Janery model, Kota. He was included in our #JaneryStyle post back in November of 2017. I just couldn’t resist those big, beautiful eyes and knew immediately that I wanted him to be one of our models. His feline brother and sister, Lucy and Leo who we shared last month, are also two of our models. What can we say? It’s a family full of fabulously photogenic pets!

    Meet the Janery Model: Kota

Kota’s mom was generous enough to answer a few of my questions so I could share more about this fabulous boy with you.

    How old is Kota?

Kota is approaching 11 months old.

What kind of dog is Kota?

Kota is an American Alsatian, a breed in progress. We've done a DNA test as well, which shows him as 65% Alaskan Malamute, 30% German Shepherd Dog, and 5% Akita.

How did he join your family?

I have always dreamed of getting a big dog, ever since I was a kid. Finally, the opportunity presented itself with a great breed and the perfect pup for me, so I went for it. I had to move to large-dog-friendly apartment for him, but it was totally worth it.

What are some of his funniest habits?

He has a specific location in our apartment that he likes to eat his treats (a rug in our living room). If I don't let him eat it there, he'll hold the treat in his mouth and whine!

    What’s Kota's sleeping style?  Is he a curler-upper, a stretcher-outer, or a flop-down-anywhere sort of pet?

Kota is a flop-down-anywhere (must be on the hardwood floor for optimal coolness), stretcher-outer kind of dog. Sometimes he'll even sleep on his back! Keep in mind, Kota is about 120 lbs, so when he flops down it makes a loud noise from him hitting the floor. I'm pretty sure my neighbors below me hate me (sorry!).

What kind of treats does he go crazy for?

Kota loves all treats. His favorite is probably the lamb ears from Real Pet Food.

How has he changed your life for the better?

Owning a dog definitely has its struggles, but it is so totally worth it. I can't imagine not having my giant buddy follow me around and making sure I'm always within his sight. Plus, he makes a great body pillow.

You have two cats, Leo and Lucy - how does Kota get along with them, and who came first?

Kota absolutely LOVES the cats! Kota is the newest member of our family, but he is certainly not the shyest. His favorite thing to do is groom/nibble the cats and leave his slobber all over them. The cats will tolerate it sometimes, but more often than not, they'll get fed up with it and swat Kota on the face. Believe me, he will never learn.

What has been your biggest challenge with raising Kota?

The puppy months were crazy. Potty training from the 3rd floor is not easy, let me tell you. Another obstacle was getting him comfortable with being alone, without disturbing my neighbors. I figured out that if I left him together in the same room as a cat, he would be much calmer than if he was left by himself.

Do you have any advice for apartment-dwellers who are considering adding a dog to the family?

Be prepared to climb a lot of stairs (or ride a lot of elevators, if you have those) during the puppy months. Also, be sure to check the weight limit for dogs before moving into an apartment. For high-rises, there is usually a 40lb weight limit, so you'll need to find a low-rise apartment with stairs if your dog is larger

    Meet the Janery Model: Kota

Aren't Kota and his siblings Leo and Lucy the perfect models for our fabulous pet beds? We sure think so. Special thanks to their mom for her photography and taking the time to answer our questions on their behalf. You can follow both Kota and Leo on Instagram.

  • Meet the Janery Models: Lucy & Leo

I “met” Lucy and Leo’s mom Jane on Instagram about two years ago and immediately fell in love with her photos and her furry family. You may have seen her dog Kota in some of our #JaneryStyle features. We’ll share Kota and his love for our huge, designer dog beds next month. For now, his feline brother and sister have the spotlight.

I was excited to have them model several of our Janery pet beds and they were purr-fect for a feature interview  - I needed to learn more about them, and thought you'd like to as well! Their mom Jane was more than happy to share some fun facts about her two fabulous felines.

Janery Meet the Model: Leo and Lucy

How old are Lucy and Leo?

Lucy is 7.5 years old, and Leo is 2 years old.

What kind of cats are they?

Lucy is a dilute tortie domestic shorthair cat, and Leo is a classic brown tabby Maine Coon.

How did the kitties join your family?

I adopted Lucy from PAWS Chicago on my very first day of work. I took a train as soon as work ended and headed to the shelter. I actually planned to adopt a kitten, but I was told it wouldn't be suitable with my work schedule at the time, so I decided on an older cat! She was around 5 years old at the time. About half a year later I started working from home more often, so I decided to get a kitten. I picked out Leo from a Maine Coon breeder in Chicago, and the rest is history!

What are some of their funniest habits?

Lucy definitely has tortitude (a unique personality that tortoiseshell cats tend to have) and often lets me know that she's the boss around here. However, she is 100% a lap cat! She loves sitting in your lap, no matter what position you're sitting in. Leo is what I always affectionately call my big baby since he loves to be cradled and given forehead kisses. He is extremely vocal and always lets me know if he wants something.

Janery Meet the Model: Leo and Lucy

    What’s Leo’s sleeping style?  Is he a curler-upper, a stretcher-outer, or a flop-down-anywhere sort of pet?  What about Lucy?

Leo is 50% a curler-upper, 50% a stretcher-outer, and usually prefers sleeping in higher up places. Lucy is a curler-upper, but will settle down anywhere she deems fit.

What kind of treats do your cats go crazy for?

Leo loves pretty much any kind of treat on the face of the planet--part of the reason he behaves so well when we take photos. ;) Lucy, however, is very picky and pretty much only likes Greenies.

How have Lucy and Leo changed your life for the better?

I used to always consider myself a dog person, and never really likes cats much. After getting Lucy and Leo, I can safely say I LOVE cats and am equal parts cat person and dog person! They follow me everywhere and always keep me company.

    Do you have other pets?

I have 3 ferrets (Evie, Pixie, and Chubby) and 1 dog (Kota).

What has been your biggest challenge with your cats?

The litter tracking. I'm still waiting on the day when someone invents the perfect type of litter, or a mat that actually traps the litter after they jump out the box. I cannot tell you the number of products I've tried while searching for a solution!

If you could give prospective or new cat owners one piece of advice, what would it be?

Always make time to spend some of the day with your cats. A common misconception is that they're completely independent, but they love to play and receive attention too! Also, don't forget to take a ton of kitten photos--that time flies by fast.

Janery Meet the Model: Leo and Lucy

Don't Leo and Lucy make fabulous Janery Models? I couldn’t have asked for better pet models for our Catnip Mats. Make sure you follow Leo on his Instagram account @Leo.MaineCoon and stay tuned to meet their brother Kota in next month's edition of Meet the Model.
